30 November 2018Belarus wants joint action with UN to combat corruption

Belarusian Internal Affairs Minister Igor Shunevich expressed interest in holding joint events with the UN agencies to combat corruption, prevent drug abuse among the youth and re-socialize former inmates, BelTA has learned from the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.



Igor Shunevich met with UN Resident Coordinator, Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki at the HQ of the ministry on 30 November. Igor Shunevich expressed gratitude to the United Nations for assistance in building up national capacity to manage migration and combat crime. “Igor Shunevich also expressed interest in arranging joint events to combat corruption, prevent drug abuse among the youth and re-socialize former inmates. He expressed hope that the United Nations will keep upholding Belarus' initiatives to respond to new challenges and threats that are of great danger to the international community,” the press service noted.

Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki welcomed an active role of the ministry in implementing joint projects with the UN and a high level of preparation and conduct of events. She confirmed the commitment of the UN team in Belarus to maintaining constructive cooperation.



For many years the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been closely and effectively cooperating with the UN agencies. Since 2005, they have implemented 16 projects related to migration, fight against domestic violence and human trafficking, illegal drug trade, as well as prevention of HIV/AIDS in prisons. At present the ministry and the UN agencies are running three international technical aid projects in the field of migration and fight against human trafficking and domestic violence.
